Cave Diving in Kanchanaburi

Diving underwater in caves in Thailand

Our second Thailand cave diving site is a one and a half hour drive north of Kanchanaburi in central Thailand.

Near the Ratchburi Dam, we’re able to load all our cave diving gear onto long-tail boats at a small pier, which gives us access to a giant lake.

We use a floating raft 55 minutes from the pier to setup all our cave diving equipment. The raft is actually a seafood restaurant, which serves our purpose perfectly as it’s only a short swim on the surface to a large island where the caves are located.

Unlike cave diving in Khao Sok which impresses us with it’s spectacular scenery both above and below the water, the attraction of cave diving in Kanchanaburi is more technical, penetrating and mapping very challenging caves.

Diving here involves much longer penetrations and complex caves. There are many cave entrances leading into the rock walls of the island ranging from 5 to 25M depth.

Inside the cave you can see many chambers, with the maximum depth around 20M. The caves are filled with stalactites and stalagmites, which although impressive don’t compare to the examples at Khao Sok National Park.

Cave diving Thailand

We suspect that these many entrances leading into the center of the island are connected to form one large cave system. Caves are tighter than in Khao Sok and the diving is much more technical, with dive times exceeding two hours inside the caves.

Again, accommodation is simple but pleasant Thai bamboo hut on the lakeside, complimented by tasty Thai cuisine and fresh fish.

For most divers we recommend Khao Sok National Park as the first choice for cave diving in Thailand, but if you're looking for something different and more technical, Kanchanburi makes an interesting trip.
